We attended Droidcon Berlin 2022 — let's recap!

Droidcon is a three-day conference for Android developers. With the Bitrise team, I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at the conference in Berlin to meet industry leaders and learn new things together with fellow Android geeks.

This was my second time attending Droidcon Berlin. It was great to meet amazing Android developers and help them with their challenges. Taking a look back at the conference, let's recap what we learned.

Day 1

When I wasn't chatting with people at the Bitrise booth or giving away cool Purr-request/Bitbot Bitrise swag, I attended the conference talks. Several interesting discussions took place throughout the event, including topics about modern Android development, Android architecture, testing, Jetpack Compose, security, and more.

Google’s Developer Relations team was also there — they kicked off the conference after the keynote with a session about “Now in Modern Android” and speaking about the best practices from both the Android team. They also explored some of the latest developments across Jetpack Compose, Material Design 3, new architecture and testing recommendations, new tools, and build optimizations.

Then the other sessions began, simultaneously with different tracks and topics. On the first day I presented my talk about DevSecOps and how we can include security testing in CI/CD pipelines so that we can release mobile apps frequently, quickly, and securely.

A video of the session will be available soon. 🙌🏻 If you are interested to learn more about the topic you can read my previous article.

Day 2

On another full day of sessions with different topics, I had a chance to attend a session about Securing Mobile Apps with OWASP MASVS & MSTG. It was an introduction to the OWASP MASVS (Mobile Application Security Verification Standard), which works together with the OWASP MSTG (Mobile Security Testing Guide) to help you understand the attack surface of mobile apps, as well as how to exploit and protect them. Read more about the project here.

In addition to this, I also attended a session by the Firebase team about how to release and monitor Android apps using Firebase, as well as how you can monitor performance and track crashes using Firebase. Firebase products are great. 🙌🏻

After that, I went to the movie night with popcorn and drinks in special cups — sponsored by Bitrise.

I also really loved Google's very unique green booth at the conference, attended by different teams like Firebase, Android, and more.

Day 3

This day was dedicated to community building, with sessions provided by the Android community including a comedy talk and a panel discussing how the developers can help in the war in Ukraine 🇺🇦

It was especially great to meet and speak with many other Egyptian Android geeks who came from different countries to attend the conference. 🇪🇬

And f you're already planning to attend next year: Droidcon Berlin 2023 will place July 5th – 7th. You can check out the ticket info now.

In the meantime, we will join several other Droidcon conferences this year such as Italy, London (UK), and New York (US)
