Today, we're kicking off a study on the impact of COVID-19 on mobile development, -developers and the companies that employ them. Participate in the survey here, and we'll share our findings with you in a few weeks. Read on to find out exactly what we're planning.

What we all have in common

Even though some regions are easing restrictions connected to the COVID-19 pandemic and many others are considering similar measures, the impact on companies and mobile developers worldwide is still very much ongoing. Anecdotally, we talk to developers that experience both positives and negative on a daily basis, but there is one constant element that unites everyone's experiences so far: uncertainty. Uncertainty about employment, uncertainty about earnings, uncertainty about the ability to grow and develop, and general uncertainty about the future. We hope to take away some of that uncertainty by tapping into the wisdom of the crowd.

The Bitrise community of tens of thousands of mobile developers around the globe mean we're exceptionally positioned to do the research that'll help separate gut-feeling from data-driven insights, and hearsay from measurable impact. Our aim is to answer both your questions and our own about the current state of mobile development in the age of COVID, as well as gather the community's thoughts and expectations on what the field will look like after the crisis has passed. We also hope this research will provide us with the necessary insights to formulate meaningful additions to our current community support efforts.

Our expected output

After we've concluded the research phase, we will provide everyone that participated and everyone else with ungated access (no "leave your email address to download") to our findings in the form of a report featuring aggregated data and conclusions drawn by our research team. We'll also share anonymized raw data, so you'll be able to validate our thoughts or draw your own conclusions.

We might publish some derived blog posts and potentially webinars, but it's unlikely we'll formulate any concrete plans for those until we've actually gathered and interpreted the data.

The survey

Our research team has spent the last two weeks crafting a survey that should allow us to answer most of the pressing questions currently occupying the mobile development community. During this initial phase, we've already performed some one on one interviews with developers around the world to find out exactly what those questions are.

Completing the survey takes roughly 15 minutes and you'll be able to skip any question you either don't feel comfortable answering or simply don't have the time for. All information collected is kept strictly confidential and will exclusively be used in a summarised, anonymized way. There's the option to consent to a follow-up interview, but that's entirely up to you.

With the survey, we're aiming for a sample size of - at least - 500 respondents, which will be followed by a series of qualitative interviews to dig into some of our initial findings. The timeline for the survey, gathering and interpreting the data, the interviews and turning all of it into actionable insights is currently 3 to 4 weeks.

We hope this helps and can't wait to share our findings with you.

Thanks and keep building! 🚀
